For a really long time, a bottle of store bought pre-made Pizza Sauce was a condiment I pretty much always had on hand in the fridge or pantry. When I started a low carb diet though and began reading the labels on everything, I was shocked to see how high the carbs/sugar are in store bought pizza sauce and that there was ADDED SUGAR in there also!
I started using different things as a pizza sauce on my keto and low carb bases, but my mind always went back to the Pizza Sauce that I had loved to use so much and my annoyance at sugar being added into it. It was a long time before I decided that I was going to try and recreate that Pizza Sauce without the sugar and made this Sugar Free Pizza Sauce.
Now, any tomato based pizza sauce you make, even without added sugar is going to seem a bit high on the carbs, as tomatoes themselves are on the higher end for sugar content when it comes to low carb vegetables. The things we tend to add as well, such as onions or garlic, are also on the higher end sugar-wise. So there will definitely be some natural sugars present in your Sugar Free Pizza Sauce.
I’ve tried to reduce those as much as possible by using garlic powder and onion powder to reduce the sugars further. This also has the added advantage of making this recipe for Sugar Free Pizza Sauce a no-cook recipe, so you don’t need to do much more than just mix the ingredients together to make this. We want something quick and easy we can just whip up or grab from the fridge to use.
While this recipe for Sugar Free Pizza Sauce is really simple with few ingredients, if you read the back of store bought pizza sauce, it’s very similar except for the lack of that added sugar, as well as a bunch of preservatives they also add in. So it’s all the great flavour of that store bought Pizza Sauce without all the added nasties.
This Sugar Free Pizza Sauce can be used for the obvious, pizza, but also can double as a marinara type sauce in other recipes too. My recommendation is just to watch the amounts you use. I’ve used a whole recipe of this Sugar Free Pizza Sauce to make a Chicken Pizza Bake, but remember a recipe like that will be serving 4-6 people, so that cup of sauce goes a very long way. For an actual pizza I would probably need no more than ¼ cup of sauce for the whole pizza. Keep serving sizes in mind when thinking of carb count as you will almost never use a whole recipe of this Sugar Free Pizza Sauce just for 1-2 people.
Once made, you can store this Sugar Free Pizza Sauce in the fridge for at least a week. I like to store in a mason jar. You can also make bigger batches and then portion and freeze for when you want to use it, but really this Sugar Free Pizza Sauce is so easy to throw together, that you don’t have much need of making big batches ahead of time!
