When I saw the new Chaffle craze and how much everyone said they loved them, my mind immediately thought of all the recipe possibilities I could make with these new chaffles. However, upon experimenting with actually making them, I found that they created so much mess that to me, they weren’t even worth making with the amount of effort the clean-up took.
I knew that if I was going to utilise chaffles at all, I needed a version that made little to no mess, or I couldn’t justify making them! I really loved the crispy cheesy-ness of the chaffles and wanted to keep that aspect in my final recipe. I experimented using less cheese, but found that the chaffles ended up tasting very much just like a cheese omelette or cheese scrambled eggs, again not worth doing as chaffles when it could be done so much more easily in a pan on the stove.
This final ratio I’ve done for these Hassle Free Chaffles are spot on in terms of that crispy cheese, non-eggy taste AND minimal mess. The only thing compromised in this version is the presentation, which may not be quite as neat as a regular waffle, but still close enough to make me happy. In fact, I rather like the rustic look of these Hassle Free Chaffles and would gladly compromise a little presentation for something that tastes great and is less work to make!
When you first make these and lift open the waffle iron/maker, you may think they don’t look presentable at all, but the trick is to flip them over and use the bottom as the ‘presentation side’. I also recommend brushing the hot waffle iron/maker with a little butter or ghee even if it is non stick, as that will help to keep the Hassle Free Chaffles from sticking and using something simple such as a plastic disposable knife or fork, to help you gently lift and unstick the Hassle Free Chaffles from the waffle iron/maker.
This recipe for Hassle Free Chaffles is designed for a waffle maker/iron that makes two square waffles. For different shapes and sizes you may have to experiment with amounts to see what works best for you. Also try and keep the cheese piled near the centre of the iron as it will melt and spread out before setting. If you have it spread right to the edges, it will simply melt and ooze out of the sides!
Hassle Free Chaffles
Equipment
- Waffle maker
Ingredients
- 1 cup grated tasty cheese
- 1 extra large egg
- Ghee or butter for greasing
Instructions
- Heat up your waffle iron. I highly recommend placing a wooden chopping board or similar under the waffle iron to catch any melted cheese and make clean up easier.
- Crack an egg into a bowl and beat with a fork until well beaten. Add in your cheese and mix together well.
- Lightly brush the plates of the waffle iron with ghee or butter to grease. Divide cheese and egg mix between the two sides to make two Hassle Free Chaffles. Try and pile the cheese near the centre, but let the egg run over the plates towards the sides.
- Close the waffle iron and cook the Hassle Free Chaffles for approximately 8 minutes. Some cheese mix may ooze out and steam will come out the sides of the waffle iron as it cooks. The steam dying down is a good indicator that the Hassle Free Chaffles are ready.
- Carefully start to open the waffle iron, if you notice the chaffles have stuck at all, use a plastic disposable knife or similar to gently lift any parts that have stuck off the plates so your chaffles don’t break.
- Once you have the waffle iron completely open, your chaffles will look like the waffle iron hasn’t been filled enough, this is what you want! Carefully lift the chaffles off the bottom plates and flip. The bottom side should be nice and presentable!
- Eat the chaffles as is or use in chosen recipe.
