Back before low carb eating, I used to make sushi all the time and had really perfected my sushi making skills over the years. I used to do gourmet sushi including blow torched and sushi sauces which I was really proud of. When I started keto I never made my old sushi again and over the years I lost all my recipes.
I had made some keto style sushi lately and remembered the old sushi sauces I used to always do. So on a whim I decided to try and recreate a few of those sushi sauces keto style! I did these two quite successfully and was really happy with the results, they were delicious sushi sauces that tasted just as good as the old sugar and seed oil versions I remembered making.
My old sushi sauces were made with Kewpie mayo which uses soybean oil as the primary ingredient. Here I’ve used homemade mayo with light taste olive oil. You can use a different neutral oil if you like such as macadamia oil, avocado oil or liquid coconut oil, but try to avoid seed and vegetable oils which cause inflammation in the body. I use sesame seed oil in this recipe but it is unheated and I use cold pressed sesame oil instead of the regular kind which is chemically extracted.
If you do want to use store bought mayo the Good Fat Mayo and Vitawerx Keto Mayo are good options as well as Primal Kitchen. Any regular store bought mayo will be made with seed or vegetable oils and usually have sugar added and sometimes grains too. They’re still low in carbs though so a lot of people do use them on low carb and keto diets.
These sushi sauces are nice and thick and I find the best way to make them is to use squeezy bottles, which also make decorating your sushi with the sauces really easy. It makes it really easy to make too because you can put all the ingredients for your sushi sauces in the bottle and then just lid and shake to combine. Otherwise some little dipping bowls would be your next best option.
