This dish here, is my childhood! It was my standard order when we would visit a Portuguese restaurant and is to this day one of my favourite meals, Bife à Portuguesa! It’s a large steak on a layer of prosciutto, topped with a fried egg and surrounded by round cut fried potato chips.
With the exception of the potatoes the meal is pretty much already low carb and I knew it would be easy to fully change it. After trying sliced swede in a mock potato bake and seeing how incredibly similar they are to potato, I decided it would be the perfect replacement for the potatoes in this dish. Turnips are similar and even lower in carbs, but sometimes where I am they can be hard to find, while swede is always available. If you can get turnip though and want the carbs to be even lower, definitely use them in place of the swede.
This tasted so much like the original Bife à Portuguesa I always loved! The swede has a slightly more bitter taste but when sliced finely it goes great with the rest of the dish. Almost all the carbs in this dish will be in the turnip or swede, so you can always sub a different vegetable to keep the carbs down.
Definitely give this a try, you won’t be sorry! And check out my other Portuguese recipes like my Portuguese Custard Tarts and my Portuguese Cod Cakes, both based off the ones my grandmother always makes!
Bife à Portuguesa (Portuguese Steak)
Ingredients
- 1 rump steak (or other steak of your choice)
- 2 slices proscuitto
- 1 egg
- 150 g swede (or turnip)
- 500 g fat for frying such as lard or tallow
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp butter sub with ghee for paleo
- salt
- pepper
Instructions
- Slice swede finely with a knife or mandolin. Season steak with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil and butter in a large frying pan and cook steak to your liking. For me this is always very RARE!
- Meanwhile melt and heat lard or tallow over medium low heat. Fry swede slices in batches and remove to paper towel to drain. Line prosciutto in the centre of a plate. Place your steak on top. Quickly fry your egg, sunny side up unless you prefer a cooked yolk.
- Top steak with egg and place swede chips in a circle around the steak. Use the runny egg yolk as a dipper for your swede chips.
