These Sugar Free Gummy Bears and Snakes were something I’d been wanting to try for ages. I’m not a huge fan of gummies myself but my brother is in love with them and I wanted to be able to make some that I could give him WITHOUT the massive amounts of sugars, artificial sweeteners, artificial colours and other nasty ingredients.
I also know that kids generally love gummies and although my own son doesn’t eat lollies, I thought how fantastic it would be to make these for things like birthday parties and be able to set out bowls of them, watching with satisfaction as the kids chowed down on ‘fun’ food without the guilt of giving them actual sugar.
I always feel awful giving kids lollies and such at parties not only because of all the sugar, but because it’s harder for parents to say no to their kids at things like parties. Then you have kids that are expecting things like lollies and party pies and are disappointed with fruit and vegetable platters!
The result is I usually put out a mix of healthy options with things they’d usually enjoy, but my dream is to have a party for my son where everything is sugar free and natural but also popular and loved by the kids too! These Sugar Free Gummy Bears and Snakes are one of the first steps in that direction!
This recipe for Sugar Free Gummy Bears and Snakes gave me either 150 Bears or 30 Snakes or a mix of 10 Snakes and 50 Bears. Sometime the amounts vary slightly and of course it will depend on the moulds you use. I got mine on eBay from China for about $2 each max and each mould came with a pipette for filling too.
These are also a fantastic activity to do together with your kids, they will have lots of fun filling up the moulds and will enjoy eating the Sugar Free Gummy Bears and Snakes even more knowing that they helped create them!
For my son, getting involved with food outside of meal times is very important to help him get used to and try new foods. These were a perfect job for him to help with and he equally enjoyed playing with the gummies and feeling their texture, another important thing for kids on the spectrum to get used to with food.
These Sugar Free Gummy Bears and Snakes are little more than water and gelatine. For colouring I used natural colour extracts and for flavours I used Sweetleaf Water Drops. These are made with stevia for flavouring plain water. Good for those trying to get off the soft drinks or that want an option without sugar and artificial sweeteners. But they worked perfectly for these Sugar Free Gummy Bears and Snakes!
Flavoured stevia drops are good too, you can pick the flavours you like but be careful adding the drops. They add sweetness as well as flavour and too much stevia can often give a strange taste. So add the drops sparingly and taste as you go to get the right amount to suit you. Experiment with different colours and flavours to see what you like best!
Sugar Free Gummy Bears and Snakes – Makes approximately 150 Bears/30 Snakes OR 10 Snakes and 50 Bears
1/3 cup boiling water
¼ cup water cold water
25g gelatine
Flavours and Colours: You can buy the Sweetleaf Water Flavour Drops from The Low Carb Emporium (Aus and NZ) or on iherb and Amazon.
1 ½ -2 tsp lemon lime water drops and 4 drops yellow food colouring and 6 drops green food colouring
1 ½ – 2 tsp raspberry lemonade water drops and 9 drops pink food colouring
1 ½ – 2 tsp peach mango water drops and 5 drops pink food colouring and 7 drops yellow food colouring
1 ½ – 2 tsp strawberry kiwi water drops and 6 drops purple food colouring
Whisk boiling water and gelatine in a tall jug or similar. Microwave for 30 seconds and then whisk again to dissolve completely. Add cold water and whisk to combine. Add your chosen flavour and colour. If you like you can divide the mix and make different flavours and colours from the same batch. I like to do one flavour/colour at a time though.
Place your moulds on a tray or similar so they lie flat. Using the pipette, carefully fill your moulds being careful not to put too much. Try and be quick because the gelatine will start to set even out of the fridge. If you don’t have enough moulds, need to do a second batch and your gelatine mix sets, just pop it in the microwave for another 30 seconds to turn it back into liquid. Once your moulds are full, refrigerate until set, approximately an hour. Gently pop out your bears and snakes. If they are fully set they should come out easily.
I like storing them in the fridge but if the weather isn’t really hot, you can keep them out of the fridge without fear of them melting or going soft.

are the water drops, like “Mio” or any store brand?

I’ve not heard of Mio, if you’re in Australia or NZ you can check them out online at The Low Carb Emporium or otherwise on iherb and I’m told Amazon has them also. Sweetleaf brand Water Flavour Drops. Hope this helps!
